The threads basic gist is that there's a bill which may or may not be passed that basically, legalizes bullying. Or more to the point, bullying the gay community. It's an interesting read and honestly, I'm worried about the way things are being run in the States.
Anyway, the point on which I'll ponder on is, as always, the wonderful replies by the Escapist community.
There are 3 distinct groups replying in this thread:-
- The gay community(of course)
- The semi religious( on the slight defensive to hardcore defending)
- The bashers( and as usual, that's effectively about the entire composition of all the replies in the thread)
But what I'm concerned about, is that 3rd group. The bashers. And what I've found is that, they're always in a huge number when it comes to 'Gay rights etc etc.' threads. They're either there to ridicule religious folk OR there to denounce everything religious. And I don't get it. Why only 'gay threads'?
Here's a simple test, make a thread about Capitalism. And include the point of the wonderful interest system that is employed by almost every bank in the world. I can say now, easily, that no one will quote from a religious text. Why did I choose Interest? Well, that's because it's universally forbidden in every religious text there is. And yet, I don't see people going up in arms with Bibles in hand and funky beards.
But start a gay thread, and within the first 10 replies, someone will quote from the Bible and thus, the bashing of that person will begin for believing in God. For making it public, that they believe in higher power. Even if you're not that religious, you will be ridiculed for even daring to believe. It's radically stupid and speaks volume about the mind set of most of the users occupying the site.
It scares me that you can't cite your beliefs without being called a fraud by the community at large. This exposes a very wide and large hole in the 'Community' of the Escapist.
There's the argument that threads like these should be in the Religion and Politics Forum, made for the express purpose to separate religion from the general proceedings of the Escapist. BUT, sometimes, you need the opinion from the people at large. And, over there at the Escapist, it never ends nicely. Ever.
